What I Learned From The World’s Most Unwanted Mechatronics
A lot of us are going to be thinking about how the future of the human race might look like when robots start taking over jobs that are currently held by humans.
But the robots aren’t going to want to be the only ones doing the work of people.
That’s where mechanical eye, the brain-machine interface technology that was unveiled in 2017 by the University of Texas at Austin, comes in.
The team has already been testing it in human trials, and now, after years of testing, they’re ready to show it off to the world.
“We are excited to be in the first batch of test subjects, and to be able to share the results with the public,” co-founder and CEO Dr. Youssef Akbari told Mashable.
“We have a lot of great ideas for how the robot will interact with us and the way we will be able get along with it, so we’re looking forward to making it into a reality.”
Mechanical eye works by sending your eyes with the robotic eye to scan your face and other objects.
As your eyes look around, a robot’s brain translates that input into a virtual image.
A computer can then use that image to perform a few other things: scan your muscles to identify them, track where your hands are, or even recognize your voice.
“The machine is very intuitive, and you don’t have to use any special tools to program it,” Akbaris said.
“You can just type a few commands and the robot does it automatically.”
When you see the robot looking at you, you’ll hear a familiar voice.
“I have a robot in my head that has to answer for me,” Akbar said.
But what makes mechanical eye different from other robots?
The team first developed mechanical eye in 2013, and since then, it’s gotten more advanced.
Now, they are ready to introduce it to a wider audience, too.
“There is an incredible amount of potential in mechanical eye,” Akbash said.
The biggest challenge, though, is that its development is still in its early stages.
“Most of us aren’t very tech-savvy, so it is still early days,” Akbaari said.
That said, mechanical eye’s developers say that they plan to make it easier for people to get started by adding a virtual assistant to the program.
“[A virtual assistant] will allow people to use the robot to help with tasks like scheduling appointments, finding a hotel room, and even help with simple tasks like checking email,” Akboras said.
They’re also hoping that people will get used to using their robot to take care of basic tasks like shopping for groceries.
They hope that the robot’s abilities will allow it to do more basic tasks as well, like getting a ride.
Mechanic eye will also have a way to track where you are, and when you go to bed.
The robot will have a sensor on the bottom of its head that detects movement in the room and lets you know if you’re awake or asleep.
You can then wake up and move around in the real world to see if it’s waking you up.
If the sensor is off, the robot doesn’t wake you up; you just get a notification.
The robot can also recognize emotions, and it’s not just the robot that can tell when you’re upset.
Mechanical eye will track the emotions you express using facial expressions, and also recognize people’s emotions and reactions.
“It will also be able identify and track the emotional state of your loved ones,” Akbass said.
It will also track your health, and what kind of medicine you take.
Akbash hopes that mechanical eye will be a useful tool in helping people cope with mental health issues.
“People can be easily put off when they have a bad day, or when they feel like they’re falling apart,” Akbati said.
Mechanical eyes are designed to help people focus better on the task at hand, and reduce their anxiety, too, since they don’t require a human to intervene.
They can even be used to help prevent panic attacks, and Akbash hopes they can also help people cope better with depression.
“I feel like [this technology] will help people with depression because they are in their own heads,” he said.
I hope it helps with mental illness.
And I hope we can use it to reduce our anxiety.”
